The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison at Boston Children’s Hospital plays a key role in ensuring safe, efficient surgical care for pediatric patients by coordinating activities between the Operating Room and the Sterile Processing Department within the Healthcare & Medical Services team. In this position, the OR/Sterile Processing Liaison serves as the primary point of contact between surgical staff and sterile processing technicians, ensuring timely, accurate availability of surgical instruments, trays, and equipment for all procedures. The Liaison monitors instrument flow from decontamination through sterilization and case cart assembly, tracks instrument sets and specialty trays, and communicates changes in surgical schedules or case needs in real time. They help prevent delays and cancellations by proactively resolving instrument or equipment issues, coordinating urgent reprocessing, and escalating concerns when needed. The role requires strong technical knowledge of sterile processing practices, including decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization methods, and storage, in accordance with AAMI, AORN, and Joint Commission standards. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison assists with validating tray accuracy and completeness, supports quality checks, and helps identify and report damaged or missing instruments. They partner closely with OR nursing, surgeons, anesthesia teams, and materials management to maintain appropriate inventory levels and support complex or high-risk surgical cases. The Liaison contributes to continuous quality improvement by participating in root cause analysis related to instrument and tray issues, tracking and trending defects, and recommending process improvements. They may assist in staff education regarding instrument handling, tray configuration, and OR/sterile processing workflows, reinforcing best practices in infection prevention and patient safety. Clear documentation, effective communication, and collaboration across disciplines are essential to the success of this role. Candidates for this position should have prior experience in sterile processing, the operating room, or a similar perioperative environment, along with knowledge of surgical instruments and reprocessing workflows. Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent is strongly preferred or required within a defined timeframe after hire. A high school diploma or equivalent is required; additional education in sterile processing, surgical technology, or a related healthcare field is highly valued. The OR/Sterile Processing Liaison must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity pediatric setting, demonstrating a strong commitment to patient safety and the hospital’s culture of excellence. This is a full-time, on-site position at Boston Children’s Hospital, requiring flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays, to support 24/7 surgical services.
